The complete guide to picking a random giveaway winner

Running a giveaway on Facebook, Instagram, YouTube or TikTok is one of the fastest ways to grow an audience — but only if the draw is provably fair. A 2024 SocialBakers study showed contests with a public, verifiable winner-selection process drive 3.5× the engagement of contests that simply post a name. Our free Random Comment Picker exists to give you that proof in under a minute.

How the random comment picker works

  1. Paste a public Facebook, Instagram, YouTube, TikTok, or Twitter post URL into the form above.
  2. We fetch every public comment on that post (we never ask for your account password — we only read what's public).
  3. Set the filters you want — minimum number of comments per user, must mention X friends, must include a hashtag, exclude users you've already drawn from.
  4. Click Pick winner. The tool uses a cryptographically-seeded shuffle (Fisher–Yates with a CSPRNG) so the result is reproducible and provably random.
  5. Download the winner list as CSV/Excel, or share a public verification link your followers can audit.

Filters that catch fraudsters

Pure random selection rewards bot farms. The picker has built-in filters that mirror what large brands like Sephora and Glossier use in their giveaway terms:

  • Duplicate-comment dedup — same user commenting 50 times only counts once. Toggle off if you want to reward engagement weight.
  • Account age — exclude accounts younger than N days (mostly Instagram). Most automated giveaway bots are <30 days old.
  • Mentions of N friends — required by most "tag a friend" mechanics. The picker counts @username tokens.
  • Hashtag match — the comment must contain a specific hashtag (e.g. #summergiveaway2026).
  • Exclude past winners — paste a CSV of usernames you've already drawn this quarter; they get filtered out.
  • Block the host — your own page/account is auto-excluded.

FTC and platform-rule compliance

Facebook, Instagram, and TikTok all forbid contests that require sharing or tagging non-followers. The US FTC requires that you (a) disclose all material conditions, (b) make eligibility rules clear, and (c) don't suggest a federally-registered lottery. Practical checklist for your giveaway post:

  • State who the giveaway is open to (country, age).
  • State the closing date and timezone.
  • State the prize value (USD) clearly. If > $5,000, US tax 1099-MISC reporting applies.
  • State that the platform (Facebook/IG/etc.) is not a sponsor.
  • State the selection method — "winner picked at random using exportcomments.com on [date]".
  • Don't ask entrants to share the post on their personal timeline. Tagging friends in comments is fine.

How to verify a draw was actually random

Skeptical winners and runners-up are the #1 source of negative comments on giveaway posts. To pre-empt that:

  1. After picking, copy the public verification link the tool gives you.
  2. Pin a comment on your giveaway post with the link.
  3. Anyone clicking it sees the seed, the comment list at draw time, and the winning index — they can replay the shuffle in any spreadsheet.
  4. Optional: livestream the draw on Instagram or TikTok and screen-record the picker tool.

Random comment picker for each platform

Facebook

Works on public posts, public Page posts, and public Group posts. Replies are included by default — toggle off if you want top-level comments only. Maximum size depends on plan (free: 100 results; Business: 250,000).

Instagram

Works on public Reels, posts, and IGTV. The picker counts comments AND the @-mentions inside them, so "tag 3 friends" mechanics work out of the box. Story comments aren't accessible via the public API — those need to stay on Story stickers.

YouTube

Picks from comments on a single video. We respect YouTube's "held-for-review" filter and exclude shadow-blocked comments. Useful for "comment your favorite product for a chance to win" mechanics on product launches.

TikTok

Pulls comments from a single TikTok video URL (login-walled comments are skipped — we cannot bypass TikTok's auth). Best for sound-based or duet-based giveaways where the comment is the entry.

Twitter / X

Pulls replies to a single tweet. We respect X's "view rate-limited" status — if X starts limiting public replies on the post, the picker tells you exactly how many comments it could see.

Why creators choose this tool over Wheel Of Names / Comment Picker / Woobox

  • The shuffle seed is exposed — you can prove the draw to followers, not just trust us.
  • No signup wall to use the tool. Other free alternatives gate after 1-2 picks.
  • Multi-platform from a single URL paste — no need for separate exports per network.
  • CSV / Excel export of the entry list, including timestamps and comment text.
  • Per-draw size scales with your plan. Free (no signup): up to 100 results per draw. Personal: 5,000. Premium: 50,000. Business: 250,000 — see pricing for the full feature comparison and API tiers for the API-specific limits.

When to use the comment picker vs. our regular export

If you only want a winner, use the picker — it pulls comments and selects in one step. If you want to keep the comment list for analytics (sentiment, top participants, demographic clustering), use the regular Instagram comments exporter or Facebook comments exporter — those download the full dataset to Excel/CSV/JSON, and you can run the picker against the export later.

FAQ

Random Comment Picker — FAQ

Is the random comment picker really random?
Yes — we use a Fisher–Yates shuffle seeded with a cryptographically secure random number generator (CSPRNG). The seed is exposed in the public verification link so you and your followers can replay the draw and confirm the result.
Do I need to sign up to use the comment picker?
No. The picker works on public posts without an account. The free tier draws from up to 100 results per post — sign up for a paid plan if you need to draw from a larger entry list, want scheduled exports, or need API access.
Which platforms does the comment picker support?
Facebook posts and Page posts, Instagram posts, Reels, and IGTV, YouTube videos, TikTok videos, and Twitter / X posts. All must be publicly viewable.
Can I exclude past winners?
Yes. Upload a CSV of usernames you've already drawn (any column works — the picker matches case-insensitive against the @-handle). Those entries are skipped before the shuffle.
Can I require a "tag 2 friends" mechanic?
Yes. Set the "minimum mentions" filter to 2 — entries with fewer @-mentions are excluded automatically.
Is this tool FTC-compliant?
Our tool itself doesn't determine compliance — your giveaway post does. We provide a public draw record so you can prove the selection was random and impartial, which satisfies the FTC and EU consumer protection requirements when paired with a clear T&C in your post.
How big a post can the free picker handle?
The free tier (no signup) returns up to 100 results per draw. Larger results and CSV/JSON require a paid plan: Personal 5,000, Premium 50,000, Business 250,000. See pricing.
Can I pick more than one winner?
Yes — set the "Number of winners" field. The tool draws N unique winners (no double-picking) and assigns positions 1, 2, 3… so you can use #2 and #3 as runners-up.
Will my followers see the draw?
Only if you share the verification link. Pin it as a comment on your giveaway post — it shows the comment list at draw time, the seed, and the winning index. Followers can replay the shuffle in any spreadsheet.
Does the picker work on private accounts or private groups?
No. We only read public comments. For private Facebook Groups, you'd need to manually export the comment list (we have a guide) and then use the picker against the CSV.
